10-minute drill

I have ten minutes to myself. There is nothing that I possibly need to do in these ten minutes. Therefore I default to this neglected blog, which has been subject to many cut-and-paste entries for the past month. I still refuse to include anything involving autobiographical incidents--though I think I may have violated that tenet by expressing the purpose of this entry.

There are a number of bands from the early to mid-60s which have created some of the most spectacular one-hit wonders ever. See 1) The Turtles, 2) Manfred Mann (ok, they had more than one), 3) Mitch Ryder "&" The Detroit Wheels, 4) John Fred and His Playboys, 5) The Cyrkle, 6) Bobby Fuller Four, 7) The McCoys...The list goes on and on.

Another interesting point:
Many bands today have strange names referring to animals--perhaps an attempt to self-consciously indicate (and at the same time challenge) their mediocrity or lack (even if its intentionally created) of commercial success. Maybe the previous aside is completely false. Regardless, the similarity is there in terms of utilizing animal names.

60s: The Monkees, The Animals, The Turtles, Blue Oyster Cult

Today: The Mountain Goats, The Wrens, Caribou, Band of Horses, White Rabbits

Thus, is there a parallel between obscure sixties bands and indie bands of today? At least in naming preference?

10 minutes is up.

what about Don McLeon with "American PIe." I don't know if a more bizarro, amazing incredible one hit wonder ever existed in the history of the universe....

I guess he's not named after an animal, but still....

the Monkees were actually pretty commercially sucessful (see the television series that started it all). Also, how 'bout the Beatles? the Eagles? the Byrds?
